I think everyone pretty much knows the popular mexican street food { like Tacos , quesadillas and tortas } Those are definitely tasty but here is a couple treats you may not know about and are still super good!
My absolute number one favorite treat since I was in elementary school is called a mangonada!!! Its a cup filled with fresh pureed mango and frozen with a popsicle stick in the center. Once its completely frozen you add chamoy and lemon and i like to get a spoon and get a little chamoy and mango in every bite! yummy!!! ❤
My second Addiction is a raspado(shaved ice) I’m sure most of you have heard of this but my favorite is a little different. The Raspado I love is shaved so fine it almost feels like sorbet. It comes in Vanilla, lime, Strawberry and sometimes coconut. If you’ve tried an american snow cone … they taste very artificial and have huge ice chips but this version tastes fresher and is especially good on a hot summer day. you also have the option of adding lechera on top which is a thick, sweet tasting milk. MMM MMM
My fav is the mexican vanilla!
Hot cheetos are delicious on there own but when you add chamoy it becomes even better! When you buy a bag of chips Some shops in mexican neighborhoods Will add chamoy for only 25 cents. If you haven’t tried it, you should! it packs a lot of flavor. you can buy a bottle of chamoy at any mexican market.
Another Variation of this is tostilocos …. you pick your base chip and they open it up add chamoy , japanese peanuts, pickled pig skin, jicama, lime and sometimes tamarind candy & cucumbers. I will eat this occasionally but its definitely takes some getting used to. The pickled pig skins sound disgusting but they don’t taste like anything the texture is just like jello lol so maybe if your feeling adventurous and want to try something new this will be for you!
Elote (corn) is something everyone has tried but mexicans add a couple of things that set it apart! They start off with boiled or grilled corn on the cob. Then they add melted butter, Mexican thick crema (or mayo), cotija cheese, lime, and paprika. Its a good snack but only eat it around people your comfortable with because it makes a mess!! Your face will be covered in white goop but thats part of the experience lol
You could easily make this at home!
This is a Mango on a stick with chili powder and lemon sprinkled on top and its so fresh and yummy. These are usually sold in parks. You can actually make a version of this at home. Just chop up some mangos into chunks and Sprinkle Tajin all over! Delicious and you can do this with cucumber too!
